1. General information
The subject Bioethics and Deontology in the context of the Degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics, provides students with essential training on the ethical, moral and legal framework in which they must develop their profession as dietitians-nutritionists, which is useful and necessary in any of the possible professional fields in which they may find themselves in the future. The dietitian-nutritionist must know the ethical principles that inform the practice of their profession, and this is an essential task of the subject. The dietitian-nutritionist must also have the ability to address the problems they faces as a health professional and to make a mature reflection on them based on deontological, ethical and legal references.
Although it is not essential to have taken other subjects, the subject Bioethics and Deontology makes sense once the students have acquired a series of basic and specialized knowledge of the training as a dietitian nutritionist to understand their professional competencies and the implications of the practice of the profession entails in different aspects.
The subject and its expected results respond to the following approaches and goals:
Discriminate the role and importance of Bioethics and Deontology in its moral, social and scientific dimension. Understand theoretical and practical application of the legal-social context and the ethical and legal bases on which the Nutritionist-Dietitian should base their future professional practice. Training to know how to adapt their actions to a changing legal framework and to a rapidly evolving scientific scenario that creates new ethical challenges in the practice of health professions.
These approaches and goals are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations Agenda 2030 (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/), in such a way that the acquisition of the learning results of the subject provides training and competence to contribute to some extent to their achievement:

2. Learning results
Upon completion of the subject, the student will be able to:
Know and understand the legislative and administrative precepts that regulate the dietitian-nutritionist profession.
Know and apply the rights and duties of the patient in their professional practice.
Respect patients and colleagues without prejudice related to gender, diversity of origin and opportunity, language or culture.
Recognize and take appropriate action in the face of improper actions by other health professionals and help their patients.
Recognize and apply the role of the dietitian-nutritionist within the health professions and be competent in working with other health professionals and other members of their team.
In order to pass this subject, students must demonstrate the following learning results:
Identify and understand the ethical-deontological, legislative and administrative precepts that regulate the dietitian-nutritionist profession.
To know the rights and duties of patients, with special attention to information (informed consent), the right to privacy (professional secrecy) and the obligatory respect for the principle of autonomy.
To know and differentiate the different types of professional liability in which the dietitian-nutritionist may incur To understand the role of the dietitian-nutritionist within the health professions and how they should act professionally, from the legal and ethical point of view with other health professionals and other members of their own team.
To be able to apply to concrete situations the ethical principles and legislative precepts that regulate the professional practice of the dietitian-nutritionist and to be competent in their exercise.
Knowledge of the legal and administrative framework in force, of the deontological and bioethical principles to exercise the functions and responsibilities of the professional of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, using the social, health and economic resources within the community, recognizing and responding to ethical or moral dilemmas and issues in daily practice.
3. Syllabus
A. Area of LEGAL AND FORENSIC MEDICINE
1.-Introduction to the subject, teaching plan, methodology and presentation.
2.-Introduction to ethics, bioethics and professional deontology for Dietitians Nutritionists (D-N).
3.-Introduction to Law for Dietitians and Nutritionists (D-N).
4.-Legal practice of the profession: intrusion.
5.-Health care act and professional practice of the D-N profession. Modalities.
6.-Professional Associations, scientific associations, trade unions, etc.
7.-Professional health responsibility.
8.-Patient's rights I: autonomy, informed consent, etc.
9.-Patient's rights II: confidentiality and professional secrecy.
10.-Medical-legal documents of interest to the D-N.
11.-Fees and taxation for D-N.
12.-Use of social networks for D-N.

The Bioethics and Deontology course is a 6 ECTS subject, which has been organized as follows: Participative master class: 1,6 ECTS. 40 hours.
Practical classes: 0.8 ECTS. 20 hours.
Works 1,6 ECTS. 40 hours.
Study 1.84 ECTS. 46 hours.
Evaluation tests: 0,16 ECTS. 4 hours.
5. Assessment system
A. CONTINUOUS EVALUATION, area of LEGAL AND FORENSIC MEDICINE:
WRITTEN TEST
30 multiple-choice questions.
Pass test: 50% of the questions correct.
The grade accounts for 60% of the final grade of the subject in the area of Legal and Forensic Medicine.
Passing this written test is a prerequisite.
PRACTICAL SESSIONS
10% of the final grade corresponds to attendance. CONTINUOUS EVALUATION requires the presence of the student with the possibility of missing 20%.
30% through weekly assignments. Their content, structure, presentation, as well as participation in class for their defence will be taken into account.
B. CONTINUOUS EVALUATION, area of MORAL PHILOSOPHY:
A written test that will account for 60% of the grade:
1º. Four presentation topics selected from the theoretical contents developed in the program.
2º. Two topics selected from the theoretical contents developed in the Seminar "BIOETHICS, DIETETETICS AND NUTRITION"
Each question will be graded with a maximum of ten points. The entire test will be graded with a maximum of 60 points, and 30 points are necessary to achieve the objectives.
Valuation of the practices: 40%.
1. Reading card (weekly). 10%.
2. Seminar review (weekly). 10%.
3. Participation. Attendance with registration (every six months). 10%.
4. Audiovisual work (semester). 10%.
A. FINAL EVALUATION, area of LEGAL AND FORENSIC MEDICINE
Written test: 60%.
Resolution of two case studies: 10%.
Writing of a work: 30%.
B. FINAL EVALUATION, area of MORAL PHILOSOPHY
A written test: six topics to be developed, chosen from the theoretical contents presented (four topics) and the selection of commented texts (two topics). Maximum of 60 points. 30 points to achieve the objectives. .
FINAL GRADE
The grade for each of the responsible areas will be 50% of the final grade.
